emotions (P = 42 x E x 7) – The Motion Study

Artist: Dennis Khalil

Year: 2016

Medium: Digital Video / Animation

Artist’s Statement

Context: Emotion and Identity

With this series of works, I explore ideas about emotion, identity, individuality, and diversity. My work simultaneously shows the diversity of emotions from person to person, and the different emotional faces within each individual. This is especially relevant in a time that is characterized by a society that attaches great importance to personal and emotional expression.

The Process: Stacking Time and Expression

In this series, I map the seven core emotions to create a ‘total picture’ of a person. I find the stacking of multiple expressions of the same emotion interesting, as it reveals both the subtle differences and the similarities. In this motion work, this ‘stacking’ becomes a fluid transition, showing the micro-expressions that occur from one smile to the next.

The Result: An Evolving Mask

This field of tension, now set in motion, creates an ever-evolving image—a digital mask that is constantly forming and dissolving. It reveals that our emotional state is not a static portrait, but a continuous, dynamic flow.
