About Dennis Khalil
Dennis Khalil is a Dutch-Egyptian conceptual artist based in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands. His work originates from the creative tension between two cultures: the structured rationality of his Dutch upbringing and the symbolic mysticism of his Egyptian heritage. Through his photographic practice, he conducts a sustained visual inquiry into consciousness, time, and the unseen layers of reality.
Artistic Practice
Time is the primary tool in Khalil’s artistic process. He explores the relationship between humanity and nature by allowing subjects to live, transform, and decay before the lens. Analogue subjects are brought into the digital realm, where time is manipulated to reveal themes of growth, vitality, and impermanence. By layering imagery with symbolic elements, his work invites the viewer to look beyond the surface and question the nature of perception itself.
Background
Born in Nijmegen, Khalil’s fascination with creation began with Lego and evolved through computer animation, film, and eventually photography. Largely self-taught, his distinct artistic vision was forged through rigorous personal experimentation. A period of study at the Academy for Visual Arts in Tilburg provided a foundation, but his independent approach to the medium—free from academic convention—defines his practice.
Career Highlights
Khalil’s exploration of time and layered realities has resulted in several distinct collections spanning over two decades. His practice reached a significant international milestone with his inaugural exhibition—a collaborative work with artist Gijs van Lith—presented at RH Contemporary Gallery in New York.
