Artist’s Statement

We have multiple faces. We are not always happy. We are not always angry. And when we are happy, it does not always look the same.

This series was created at a moment when society places enormous value on identity, individuality, and personal expression. In that context, Khalil asks a deceptively simple question: what does a person actually look like, emotionally, in total?

By mapping the seven core human emotions — joy, sadness, fear, anger, disgust, surprise, contempt — across six subjects, the series deconstructs and reassembles the ‘total picture’ of each individual. For each emotion, each subject was photographed multiple times. Every laugh is slightly different from the last. Every expression of fear carries its own subtle variation.

It is this tension — between the universality of shared emotion and the irreducible individuality of each expression — that generates the work’s power. The stacking of the same emotion creates a new image: a new mask, a new portrait, a more complete truth.
